Nicaragua Part one.. The work!

Well, i just got back from my trip, two words.... WOW! hehe. Anyway, It was amazing. I got to do so many cool things involved in dentistry. I'll explain them by the pictures.

This is the first thing we did, We went to a ward building that was packed with people. It was actually an old school that they chruch rented, here we went to church then passed out gifts to the families and thing that needed. This was one part of the humanitarian projects for the week and the only one that us pre-dental students did. It was awesome to see how happy the families were to get these simple things and also to get a family photo. It was really rewarding.

On the TOP was my first day, I got to work with Luis and Rafa. These are two dentists from honduras that have been working with the group for previous years, I learned a TON of spanish working with them. Right in the picture i am curing (making hard) a filling that we have just put in. On the BOTTOM I am working with DR. Gary Crawford, He is an oral surgan, we got to do alot of cool thing like cutting a kids toung lose from the bottom of his mouth and many wisdom teeth extractions. Also the kid in the chair in the picture sat there for 2 hours. he had 4 wisdom teeth to take out and also 2 extra teeth under his front bottom teeth that had to be removed. It was the hardest tooth to remove, the doctor had to drill from the back and tried to pull it out and when that didn't work he had to remove the gums from the front of the teeth and drill into the jaw bone to push the tooth out. It took a long time, it was so interesting. I worked with two other dentists that arent pictured and got to do some cleanings and alot of assisting.

ON the TOP I am taking X-rays, on ther BOTTOM I am doing sterilzation.

Sterlization was a hard job so we made it fun by floating a ping pong ball over the steeming pots.

What a wonderful experience! My dad grew up in Colombia and dentists used to come and do the same thing for him when he was a little boy.

What a great experience. You look so official in scrubs and a doctors mask. Very Cool!
