Rome--The Coliseum

We took a short taxi drive, with a CRAZY cab driver, to the coliseum.  Even the other cab drivers were calling him crazy as he zipped through the traffic and cut off buses and drive on the wrong side of the street. But thankfully, we made it there ok.

Ruins outside of the coliseum

Arch that lead to the coliseum and detail on the arch....

What a view!

 Inside the coliseum...

This picture shows the two levels below the "stage" that isn't there anymore.  This is where the animals and gladiators would wait until their entrance.

This is a scale replica of what the two levels beneath the stage looked like and how the pulleys were set up so the gladiators and animals would raise up from underneath.

A replica of the stage or arena

It was really hot.  Mom and I stood in the shade any chance we could get.
